Commanders Message
September 2000
The summer of 2000 was exceptional for CIPS. The Blessing of the Fleet was a great success. The weather was perfect and 105 vessels were blessed.
Next came the day raft up in Plandome and again the day was picture perfect with 11 vessels participating until the early evening hours. On August 19 and 20 the overnight raft up was held in Oyster Bay. This was one of CIPS largest overnight raft-ups in recent history and although this was the summer that wasn’t, once again we had good weather. Thanks to Danny Perugini and Jim Duffy, the night was magical with the playing of guitars and the singing of song.
Finally, there was the annual CIPS Regatta. The captains meeting at the Morris Yacht Club was well organized with a great continental breakfast for all. Seven sailing vessels competed for the Steiner Cup and although the summer weather finally caught up with CIPS – it rained, it did not stop any of the skippers or crew from completing the course. The after-race barbecue at my home had every boat captain in attendance and the spinning of many tales of the "Great Boat Race".
Now for the good news/ bad news! First the bad news – If you didn’t participate in any of these events, you missed a great opportunity for a good time while sharing the camaraderie of your fellow members. Now the good news – We have an extensive fall and winter set of events in which you can participate.
Good health to all and hope to see you at a meeting soon!

Ahoy There!
June 4th, 2000 was a rare day – as it was the day chosen by the City Island Power Squadron to launch their annual "Blessing of the Fleet", which opens the boating season for the new millennium.
It was a grand day, with the sun beaming on the calm seawater. Boats were everywhere. Most of their skippers were headed for the meeting point near Harts Island to prepare for the parade to pass the Grand Stand at Fentons. There were clergy members of the various faiths, the VFW Color Guard and Officers of our squadron bridge.
In total, there were 103 boats of all kinds and sizes plus some others, who passed by the Grand Stand to receive their blessing. Yours truly, was allowed to fall into line in the 4th place among our past Commanders. It was a great day and experience for me – one most unforgettable.

WednesdayEDUCATION UPDATE
"Safety Through Education"
PUBLIC BOATING:
Chaiperson: P/C Jim Duffy, AP
The Fall Boating Class is gearing up to start on Wednesday, the 18th of October at the City Island Yacht Club. Extra hands make the work easier. If you would like to help out or you have some friends and family interested in taking the course, call Jim at 718-863-3855.
SEAMANSHIP:
Chairperson: Cdr. Gary Mandarano, JN
Our Seamanship course will start after the Fall Boating class so that it is available to any new members that we pick up. If you haven’t taken the course, call Gary and make your reservations.
PILOTING:
Chairperson: 1st Lt. Gary Bieniewicz, AP
This course is scheduled to start on Wednesday, October 18th to coincide with the availability of the City Island Yacht Club. If there are folks out there who haven’t taken Piloting, call Gary at 718-828-1972. The location provides a great opportunity for getting in the nautical mood.
ADVANCED PILOTING:
Chairperson: Lt Charles Palumbo, AP
Charlie is ready to go with Advanced Piloting at his home starting on Tuesday, October 24th. The class is almost full - space is limited. If you are ready for the finer techniques of coastal piloting – give Charlie a ring at 718-822-6073 and get your foot in the door.
JUNIOR NAVIGATION:
Chairperson: P/C Edward Shimansky, N
I know there are many of you who haven’t taken this course. You are
not a real navigator if you can’t operate without the comfort of the
shoreline to guide you. Ed’s ready to form a class if he can get a small
handful of takers. Call 718-931-8373 if you are interested. Your destiny lies in
the stars!
Who says we take the summer off for boating? Gary’s class is drawing to a close soon and may not be available again until next summer. We’ll keep you posted on the progress of our students.
ENGINE MAINTENANCE:
Chairperson: P/C Danny Perugini, N
This class is starting at the SEO’s home on Tuesday, October 24th. He already has a full class (space is limited) and hopes to be done sometime in February.
Classes in CRUISE PLANNING and SAIL are being considered, but we had no takers at the Education Expo.
Also, our new Supplemental Programs Chairperson, P/C Joyce Mauro, JN has a complete set of learning guides that she can show at meetings. They can be ordered for any of our members that might like to read at home during those cold winter months. Topics like Knots and Hitches, GPS, Oceanography, or Introduction to Sail are available. These guides are not an alternative to any class, but may satisfy certain special interests and curiosities.
Your Education Officer encourages all of you to compliment your boating experiences with the knowledge and resources available to you. A thorough knowledge of safe boat operation is in the best interest of everyone’s safety. Take a course… boat with confidence!
